Hello friends! I am considering purchasing a pair of Yuri monoblocks and the universal preamp kits, the Yuris seem to be great value, with unusual valves. My only concern is if 2 watts output power would be sufficient for me.
At the moment I am using a cheap Chinese single ended kit I built that uses 6v6 tubes with a single 6n2p driver tube, and I love the sound. The kit is rated at 4/5 watts output, but goes plenty loud enough for me, I don’t play my music too loud because of my neighbours, probably around 70-80db.
My speakers are a pair of Rogers LS7t’s, 88db efficiency, 8 ohms with an 8″ driver and titanium tweeter.
I know it’s a difficult question to answer, and I wish the speakers were more efficient, but I love the sound these mid 80’s speakers make, with a full bass, midrange and treble too.
All the best to all.August 13, 2024 at 10:48 am #17040Jim LambtonKeymasterHey Mark! Almost any amp will drive almost any speaker, the question is will the amp drive the speakers to full normal listening volume while playing very dynamic music – without clipping or coming close to clipping (we need to have some head room). We run custom OB (open baffles) that are ~93db efficient and the Yuri’s will make you deaf in short order (when we did the max volume test we both had to wear industrial hearing protection). Unfortunately 88db to 93db isn’t 5 short steps of efficiency, but almost 1/3 the efficiency (db scale is logarithmic). So yes you’ll get sound, but is it a good pairing – unfortunately no. The GU-50 would be a much better choice. As an audiophile of many years (how many? too many!), i’ve come to the conclusion that you really want to run efficient speakers – the response time is so much faster and as a result the overall speaker dynamics are truly amazing.
If you want to capture the sonics of your current speaker system with a higher efficiency speaker, look for paper coned speakers and unless you really like the sound of horns – stay away from horns and metal domed tweeters.August 13, 2024 at 11:11 am #17041Mark PabloParticipantThanks for the quick reply and very useful comment Jim! Yes, unfortunately my LS7’s aren’t efficient enough for the Yuris, love the look of those power tubes and drivers too!
Believe it or not, I have a pair of speakers that are 114db efficient- unfortunately they are Cerwin Vega V152’s, which are pa speakers with a 15″ driver and horn loaded tweeter, so not hifi at all! -
