Hello everyone, this is Charles here. You might know me from my brief appearance on youtube in the Tube Lab, or from the many shout outs my Dad has given me when talking about the PCB design and frequency testing of the kits.
Despite working with my Dad for over a year now and doing quite a bit of design and technical work, this is my first time building a kit amp. So I thought I’d post my progress and you could follow along with me.
Right now I’ve worked my way through Episode 3. So I’ve checked the contents of the package, organized my parts, tested my diodes and resistors. Then I built the power supply board, and I’ve just finished assembling the plinth.
You can see my finished power supply board here:
Overall I’m happy with how easy it was to assemble. I’ve soldered before, including other electronics kits, and often found that pad sizes are small and component spacings can be tricky. I’m glad that this was so easy to work with.
Next I assembled the plinth and found it straightforward, only taking a few minutes. I’m going to leave it out to darken a bit now and see if I can get some of that lovely cherry colour before I put a coat of poly on it.
It’s starting to look like something! Excited to move on to the next step.

It’s really going together quickly now. I’m thinking one or two more build sessions and it’ll be ready to power up. I’m excited!

I missed a few pictures unfortunately but everything went fairly smoothly. There were a few small hickups along the way that are going to inform on the main production run. Mainly supplying more of a few lengths of wire and some spare parts just in case.
Here it is all wired up and getting its first voltage test:
Voltages all looking good, just a touch high but so is my house wiring (Reading between 120-124vac at wall).
Time to pop some tubes in!
ahh look at that glow! Gotta love the first filament light.
And here are some shots of the done amp:
Now unfortunately I can’t actually listen to it, as it’s other half is currently on the other side of the country. But I’ll give my thoughts on the sound first chance I get. Though I listened to its prototype cousins quite a bit and loved it.

Will be interested in your listening thoughts when you get the other half done.February 13, 2022 at 7:04 am #13840clambton29KeymasterThanks marchunter. This is my first kit build and I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to doing some listening and building and developing some more. We’ve got plenty of interesting stuff on the way!
