Greetings fellow kit builders! I discovered that some liquified flux had run down onto the positive copper center post of my RCA input terminal while soldering the positive wire to the copper post vertically. I carefully cleaned inside the RCA terminal with a thin q-tip and Acetone to remove the flux. I soldered the rest of the RCA center post copper terminals horizontally and did not get any flux inside the terminal. I “tightened up” all my center soft Copper RCA positive terminals with my awl…. spreading apart with my awl….the soft copper center soldering post “wings” that spread against the center white insulating material that you can see. The center RCA post does not move around inside the jack any longer. I hope this observation can help. Best Wishes to all, Brian

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for sharing your observation. I’m going to go through the build videos and add notes at the appropriate points to share your advice.

Brian can you clarify what you mean when you say “soldered horizontally” is this the incoming wire position or the soldering iron?
A picture of your finished work would be awesome!

    Cheers,
    Jim

Jim, I took Brian‘s advice and also soldered the center post of my RCA socket vertically with great success. I experienced the same problem with excess flux running down the center post that caused movement. I reworked my solder connection with new sockets vertically as Brian suggested and I am very pleased with my new results!

BTW: I am an hour give or take from entering the testing phase and trying out my first track on the preamp…… I’m so excited!

I actually meant horizontally side to side not up-and-down.

That’s good confirmation that this is a good method to avoid the problem of flux and/or solder flowing downhill! It wasn’t until your post just now that I figured out what the heck Brian was saying. So to clarify – you mount the top plate in the plinth and put the whole thing on its side – and solder the RCA jacks in, with them in the horizontal position. This is exactly why we have Test Builders, to work out what parts you’re finding difficult to assemble.
Carry on with your excellent work!
    Cheers,
    Jim

You got it Jim! I put the plinth on its side and then soldered the wire to the center pin. I found the RCA socket jobs to be the most difficult and intense. Definitely need to be wide awake and focused to do the job.

    Greetings,

During the last stages of wiring up, I noticed I have only one ring terminal left. I decided to share both of the green ground return wires and crimp them onto my last ring terminal. These are the wires that also share The negative transformer wire…… It made sense to me just to share the terminal since it’s going to ground and I only have one ring terminal left…… Any harm in that?… All my wiring is done moving on to testing tomorrow.

That’s perfectly fine, in fact I would do more shared connections like that in the Kit Build, but it just gets too complicated.
